Dudley Really Did It This Time ...

I was fooling around with the Blogger settings and I totally wiped out everything in the sidebar of Dudley's Diary with the excepting of my avatar and about me section. All of my photos, widgets, animated gifs and awards etc are gone and I somehow changed the template of my blog and have been unable to figure out how to change it back. Damn, the layout button has disappeared. I seem to have changed to a Classic template and do not know how to fix this. Son of a BITCH!

Dudley Had To Call And Make An Appointment ...

at the dentist today. Last night Dudley was flossing and a temporary crown came flying out. Dudley should have had this replaced with a permanent crown a few years ago but Dudley hates going to the dentist. Now Dudley has no choice but to go.

Frank Went Fishing Yesterday Evening ...

down at the creek that runs down behind the Dudley domicile. He took his brand new South Fork Rod Company "Classic" seven and one half foot four weight fly rod out for the first time. He said it was the best fly rod he has ever casted. He walked and waded a pool above a low water dam and managed to catch three sunfish. The water was clear and runs over a limestone bottom. He saw a few small bass but the water was so clear he thinks they saw him and backed off as they were checking out the popper and dropper fly he was offering. Frank has not fished this section of the creek in some time. He normally fishes a deep hole of water two or three miles down stream or the last couple of hundred yards of the creek a few miles down stream from there where the creek empties into the river. Dudley father used to fish this creek as a young teenager before WWII. The creek is in danger of being destroyed from the placement of a sewage treatment plant several miles upstream from the neighborhood where Dudley lives. The people that live along the creek are trying to stop the project but it remains to be seen what will happen. If this beautiful clear running creek is polluted with the outflow from a raw sewage treatment plant, it will be a damn shame.

Dudley Has A Collection Of Landing Nets ...

displayed for the photo hanging on the fireplace from the nails we use for our stockings at Christmas. Dudley bought the net on the far right off eBay around seven years ago after we moved into our current house. Dudley had hung his trophy Largemouth Bass on the wall in the front room. There was a bare space on the wall next to the mount so Dudley looked and found the net and got it for around ten bucks. When the net came, Dudley examined it and could tell it was well made and was in like new condition. The seller described it as an unused net and did not give any idea of it's origin or maker. Yesterday, Dudley got Frank to look at the net for any signs of a makers mark. Dudley's eyes are not that great any more. Frank found the net was indeed signed by the maker and he could make out all but the first letter. After some Google research, Dudley determined the net was made by Meisselbach & Bro. Dudley was amazed to read about the history of this company started by the son of German immigrants to the USA in 1885. From reading about the history of this company, it would appear that this net could very well be over 100 years old. What an amazing piece of fishing history!

Dudley Won Another Auction On Ebay ...

for a USA made Martin fly reel model 63. It is NOS and comes in the original box with the paperwork. It is just like the reel that Dudley learned to fly fish with and used for many years. It came in a Martin Fly Fishing Combo with an eight foot yellow Martin fiberglass fly rod with a package of floating fly line. If Dudley remembers correctly he got the outfit at the Green Stamp store. Dudley has a lot of great memories fishing with that fly rod and reel up on the Illinois River up in Northeastern Oklahoma up near Tahlequah. Dudley's family used to own a log cabin up on a high bluff overlooking the river. Dudley caught a bunch of sunfish and largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing out of an old Grumman square stern aluminum canoe. Those were the days! Now if Dudley could just find a NOS yellow Martin fly rod. Now that would be something to get excited about.

Dudley Got Out And Ran Some Errands Today ...

first, Dudley and daughter went by the bank, then we went by Chick Fil=A for lunch. We drove over and ate in Dudley's truck parked in the parking lot at Hawks Creek Golf Club. While we were eating we were treated to an airshow with a couple of fighter jets from the nearby Naval Air Station circling the area and darting in and out of the clouds, doing barrel rolls and just having fun. Gave us a great show and Dudley wants to come back in his next life as a fighter pilot. After eating, daughter drove home and Dudley continued on to the barber shop for a much needed haircut. After that, Dudley went by the drive through convenience store to buy Lottery tickets. Dudley is going to win the big one one of these days. Dudley then went back home and was glad to get back inside to the AC. It is hot outside and Dudley was glad to get his errands done as there is an 80% chance of rain tomorrow. Frank is working today mowing yards for the lawn service. He came home yesterday after working and cooked some exotic deer burgers out on the grill, they sure were good. Frank got his custom build fly rod yesterday. I waited for him to get home and let him open it up. It is a beautiful fly rod and Dudley can not believe he was able to get such a good deal on the rod. Monday, Frank and Dudley are going to go get a case for it. Not sure when Frank will be going fishing again, hopefully he will get to go before too long.

When Dudley Was A Young Boy We Went On A Vacation ...

to Colorado. It was in the hot summertime and it was good to get out of the heat of North Central Texas. It was Dudley's first of many trips to Colorado. Dudley remembers seeing the Rocky Mountains for the first time and it was pretty spectacular for a kid. We stayed in Denver and made a car trip up and over one of the tall mountain peaks. Dudley remembers getting out and playing in the snow up on one of the mountains. Pretty exciting stuff for a flat lander like Dudley. I remember we spent some time in Denver and went for a paddle boat ride on a lake in a city park with my dad. One evening we all went to a big amusement park, Elitch Gardens. Dudley remembers seeing a big white wooden roller coaster that was as impressive as the mountains. Dudley begged his dad to take him for a ride on the coaster named "Twister". Dad was ready to take me on the coaster ride when Dudley's mother gave him one of those looks and he changed his mind and said we could not ride it. Damn, Dudley was deprived of his chance to ride one of the most historic coasters in the country. My dad made up for it later on that vacation when we slipped off to a hardware store and he bought Dudley his first pocket knife. Now that was a consolation prize worth bragging about. Dudley has ridden a lot of roller coasters since then. Dudley has enjoyed them all with his most memorable ride being on the "Rattler" in San Antonio at Fiesta Texas. Dudley and his sister rode the rattler and survived the most wicked coaster in the state. That was before they had to rebuild it, tamed it down because of all of the injuries and resulting lawsuits. That was the only coaster Dudley ever rode that he did not want to get on a second time. Once was quite enough on that one.

Dudley Added Another Fly Rod To His Collection Today ...

Dudley bought this on Ebay for $45.00 buy it now which was a good deal on this mint NOS Wright & McGill "Sweetheart" fly rod. It is a beautiful rod and is a 7 or 8 weight. Dudley is going to let Frank fish with it some, it should make a great Bass Bugging rod. Not for sure but I think the rod is possibly 25 years old or somewhere thereabouts. I know one thing for sure, they don't make em like this anymore.

Dudley's Old School Trout Net He Bought On Ebay ...

came in the mail today. It appears to have never have been used and is a work of art. It was made by Ed Cumings Inc. of Flint Michigan. It is handcrafted of steam bent strips of wood. It is varnished and polished to a beautiful finish and has a cool decal of a flint arrowhead on the leather tipped handle. This company made a lot of these nets I think going back to the thirties. I do not think they make them like this any more. They are still in business but there were not any wooden nets on their website. The net came with the original lanyard and snap swivel clip attached. I got the net for twenty dollars even which was a good deal. I have seen these nets listed at antique store websites costing close to one hundred dollars and they were not in nearly as good condition as the net I received. Dudley never went trout fishing which is kind of sad. Dudley's father loved to trout fish and made several trips to New Mexico and Colorado when he was growing up. He made one last trip up there to fish after Dudley was grown not long before he died. He did not catch many fish and he was disappointed to see most of the places he used to fish back when he was a young man had been closed off to fishing. Dudley is not going to be able to go but is thinking about sending Frank on a guided float trip on the southern most trout fishing river in the country. It is the Guadalupe River here in Texas below Canyon Lake and every winter some huge trout are caught out of it's waters. It is strictly catch and release fishing for several miles and Frank would have a blast catching some on his fly rod/reel. Dudley has an idea Frank's Grandfather would approve.
