The 1896 Hearne House In Palestine, TX ...

Located at 503 Hodges Street. Dudley got a personal tour from the owner back in the early 80's. She was retired and lived by herself in that big house. The red brick exterior was added in 1902. The house was built by John Randolph Hearne for his bride Emma. They raised three children in the house. He was in the Hardware business. Must have sold a lot of hardware to build a house like that. From what I could find on him he was born into a prosperous family with a lot of "old" money. The house was full of some of the most beautiful antique furniture you could imagine. Dudley remembers going up in the attic and he saw the coolest big arched top wooden console old timey  tube radio. It probably stood almost four feet tall. It was just sitting unused up in the attic. It was just begging for someone with the know how to get it working again and bring it back to life. Palestine had an abundance of Victorian era mansions in an old neighborhood on the south side of town. This house was unusual as it and a few other other mansions were located on the far north edge of town. One of the mansions to the east looked like Gone With The Wind with big white columns across the front. When those houses were built transportation was by horse and buggy! In a few short years, the horseless carriage would change that!
